Abstract
Chronic hepatitis is a chronic inflammatory reaction in the liver usually continuous without improvement for at least 6 months, and it is a common disease in Orientals unfortunately.Ultrasonogram has had limited values in diagnosing diffuse liver abnormalities especially in chronic hepatitis. Two main sonographic features of chronic hepatitis are coarsening of liver echogenicity and decreased extent and poor visualization of portal vein walls, but the interpresonal difference of criteria and severity is a practical problem. We had performed a retropsective study on chronic hepatitis and utrasonogram with two different groups of cases: The first group (20 cases); Randomized sampling of biopsy proven chronic hepatitis cases and blind retrospective review of sonograms. The second group (20 cases); Clinical end results of cases sonographically diagnosed as chronic hepatitis. The results are follows.
1. Sonographic diagnosis of biopsy proven 20 cases of chronic hepatitis were normal in 11 cases (55%), chronic hepatitis in 6 cases, liver cirrhosis in 2 cases and fatty liver in one case.
2. The clinical end results of chronic hepatitis on sonography were normal in one case, chronic hepatitis in 12 cases, liver cirrhosis in one case and others in 2 cases.
3. The sonographic examination has tendency of underdiagnosis in chronic hepatitis, but the specificity is relatively high.
